Cloister restoration plan

The cloister of the Former Mercedarian Monastery is one of the most important architectural monuments in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. The large courtyard within the cloister is approximately 4000 square feet in size. The restoration proposal approved by the Dominican Monumental Heritage Department includes converting the cloister and courtyard into a multiple-purpose area that will serve as venue for receptions, concerts, lectures, exhibits, etc.
The design has respected vestiges of the original 16th century flooring which is being preserved. The construction materials used add harmony to the stone masonry walls of the adjacent church and other facilities.
